This aerial photo of the Lorain Lighthouse, locally known as the Jewel of the Port, was taken during a winter sunset at the Port of Lorain. It was built in 1917 on Lake Erie by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and was taken out of service in 1966 when it was replaced by an automated light tower on a nearby breakwater.
Today the lighthouse is managed by the Lorain Lighthouse Foundation, which offers Sunset Wine Dinners and guided lighthouse tours. Lorain Lighthouse is appreciated for its beauty and magnificent views of Lake Erie by residents and visitors of Northeast Ohio and the Port of Lorain.
The lighthouse became such a symbol of the city of Lorain that the likeness of the red-roofed structure is replicated in everything from the blue archways that span Broadway Avenue in downtown Lorain to a Little Free Library book-sharing box.
